How Is Your Due Date Calculated?

Your due date can be determined in several ways. If you know the exact day you conceived, you can calculate your due date by counting 38 weeks from that date. This reflects the typical length of human gestation—38 weeks.

However, most expectant mothers don’t know their exact conception date. Even if you had sex only once during your fertile window, conception wouldn’t necessarily occur on that same day unless ovulation happened simultaneously. Sperm can live in the fallopian tubes for up to five days, meaning conception could occur days after intercourse when an egg is released.

Calculating Your Due Date Without Knowing Conception Day

Using the First Day of Your Last Period

The most common method of calculating your pregnancy due date is by counting 40 weeks from the first day of your last menstrual period (LMP). This method aligns with how most healthcare providers determine due dates.

If your menstrual cycle is of average length (28 days), ovulation typically occurs about two weeks after your period starts. This explains why pregnancy is often said to last 40 weeks, rather than 38.

While this method doesn’t consider the exact length of your menstrual cycle or the specific day you might have conceived, it’s widely used because many women can easily recall the start of their last period. If you remember this date, use our Due Date Calculator for an estimated due date.

Conception Date

If you know exactly when you conceived—perhaps through using an ovulation predictor kit or tracking ovulation symptoms—you can calculate your due date based on that conception date. Simply select this option from our calculator’s dropdown menu and enter the relevant date.

Remember, conception doesn’t necessarily occur on the day you have intercourse.

IVF Transfer Date

For those who conceived through IVF, you can estimate your due date based on your IVF transfer date. For a Day 5 embryo transfer, count 261 days from the transfer date. For a Day 3 embryo transfer, count 263 days. You can also select “IVF” from our Due Date Calculator options.

Ultrasound Scan

An early ultrasound scan, typically done in the first trimester, can offer another method for determining your due date. In some cases, an early ultrasound is more accurate than relying on the last menstrual period, conception date, or other methods. Choose “ultrasound” from our calculator’s dropdown menu if you’ve had this scan.

Not all pregnant women receive an ultrasound at their first prenatal appointment, though. Some healthcare providers perform them routinely, while others reserve them for specific circumstances, such as when the due date is uncertain or if you have risk factors like irregular periods, pregnancy complications, or a history of miscarriage. Women over 35 or those with certain chronic health conditions may also receive early ultrasounds.

Can Your Due Date Change?

Yes, your due date may be revised, particularly if a first-trimester ultrasound shows that your baby is significantly larger or smaller than expected for their gestational age. This adjustment is more likely if you have irregular menstrual cycles, which can make pinpointing the exact date of conception challenging.

During your ultrasound exam, your healthcare provider will measure your baby to assess gestational age and provide a new estimated due date if necessary.

Already Know Your Due Date?

If you already know your due date, you can use our pregnancy calculator to explore your pregnancy timeline. The calculator will help you track important milestones and prepare for prenatal tests and visits.

How Likely Are You to Give Birth on Your Due Date?

It’s important to remember that due date calculations, whether from our calculator or your healthcare provider, are only estimates. In fact, only 5% of women give birth on their due date. Labor can occur any time during the two weeks before or after.

When Can You Take a Pregnancy Test?

Wondering when you can take a pregnancy test? For the most accurate results, wait a few days after your missed period before testing. At-home urine tests detect the presence of hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) in your body. Testing too early, before you’ve missed your period, may yield inaccurate results, despite what some tests claim.

For faster results, your healthcare provider can administer a blood test, which is more sensitive than at-home tests. Blood tests can detect pregnancy as early as six to eight days after ovulation.
